A significant step toward strengthening Liberia’s future has been taken with 43 students receiving fully funded scholarships from the Ministry of Education to study at Notre Dame University of Liberia (NDUL) for the 2026 academic year. This scholarship program focuses on building human capital in critical sectors such as education, agriculture, and language studies, aiming to equip young Liberians with the skills needed to support national development.

Scholarship Program Overview

The Ministry of Education sponsors this scholarship to provide full undergraduate funding at NDUL. The program targets students who demonstrate strong academic ability and a commitment to contributing to Liberia’s growth. The scholarships cover tuition and related costs, allowing recipients to focus fully on their studies in key areas:

  • Sustainable Agriculture

  • Early Childhood Education

  • French Language Education (with English as a minor)

These fields were chosen to address national priorities: improving food security, enhancing educational quality, and expanding language skills to support communication and cultural exchange.

Focus on Sustainable Agriculture

Many scholarship recipients will study Sustainable Agriculture, a field critical to Liberia’s food security and rural development. Agriculture remains a backbone of the Liberian economy, and training students in sustainable practices will help improve crop yields, soil health, and environmental conservation.

Students will learn modern farming techniques, pest management, and resource-efficient methods. This knowledge will enable them to introduce innovations in their communities, helping farmers increase productivity while protecting natural resources.

Advancing Early Childhood Education

Another group of scholars will focus on Early Childhood Education. Quality education at the earliest stages is essential for long-term academic success and social development. These students will be trained to become educators who can improve teaching methods, curriculum design, and child development programs.

By investing in early education, Liberia aims to build a strong foundation for future generations, reducing dropout rates and improving literacy and numeracy skills from a young age.

Expanding Language Education with French and English

The scholarship also supports students studying French with English as a minor. French is an official language in many neighboring West African countries, and proficiency in French opens doors for regional cooperation, trade, and diplomacy.

Students will develop language skills that enhance communication and cultural understanding, preparing them for careers in education, government, and international organizations.

Expectations for Scholarship Recipients

The Ministry of Education expects scholarship recipients to maintain good academic standing throughout their studies. Beyond academics, students are encouraged to engage in community service and outreach programs. This involvement helps scholars apply their knowledge in real-world settings and fosters a sense of responsibility toward their communities.

After graduation, scholars are expected to return to their communities, especially rural and underserved areas, to apply their skills and knowledge. Their work will contribute to improving education quality, advancing sustainable agriculture, and promoting language education across Liberia.

Impact on Liberia’s Development

This scholarship program aligns with Liberia’s national goals of improving education, food security, and language skills. By investing in human capital, the government is building a workforce capable of addressing the country’s challenges and driving progress.

The focus on sustainable agriculture supports efforts to reduce hunger and poverty, while improvements in early childhood education lay the groundwork for lifelong learning. Expanding language education strengthens Liberia’s ties with neighboring countries and enhances opportunities for its citizens.

Encouragement from the Ministry of Education

The Ministry congratulated all 43 scholarship recipients and urged them to take full advantage of this opportunity. The government sees these students as future leaders who will play a vital role in Liberia’s development.

Students are reminded that their success depends not only on academic achievement but also on their commitment to serving their communities and contributing to national progress.
